SAN MARCOS – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its 2008 season get off to a tough start at Cal State San Marcos.
The Golden Eagles were unable to muster any offense and dropped a 1-0 decision to Cal State San Marcos Friday in San Marcos. Cal State L.A. (0-1), which enjoyed its best season ever in 2007, surrendered the game's only goal with 16 minutes remaining in the second half.
Cal State San Marcos (2-0) enjoyed an 11-9 edge in shots and took eight corner kicks to just three for the Golden Eagles. The Cougars had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks in the second half and the game-winning goal came off a corner kick.
Cal State L.A. was whistled for nine fouls, while Cal State San Marcos was called for 12.
The Golden Eagles, who rode a stingy defense all the way to a Far West Region Championship game appearance last season, didn't give the Cougars many scoring opportunities on Friday. Goalie
Heather Emswiler was not credited with a save in the contest. Cal State San Marcos goalie Kaycee Gunion had three saves.
The game's only goal came when Lauryn Maes headed in a corner kick from Taylor Ziencina.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday against NCAA Division II opponent Texas A&M Commerce.
